Evaluation

A brief to create a music magazine front cover, contents page, double page spread and four photographs we had taken ourselves. With no preference to what sort of music it had to be, it allowed us to use our imaginations. This also meant with today’s decline in magazine sales that we had to find a gap in the music magazine market, to target a particular audience. I decided to focus on students aged 12-16 as I feel this age group are most influential in music sales. My initial idea was to focus on a particular genre of music for example Pop, however I then decided that having a wider range of music would attract a wider audience. The colours and vocabulary represent my target audience. Shortened words and snappy phrase’s were used since this is the language used by my target audience, everyday when talking to friends therefore relates to the readers. The free posters advertised on the front cover helps give a clear indication of the social group chosen. The age selected are when young female first start to lust toward males. In the double page spread language is very "chatty" and fun, making the article easy to read. The vibrant colours and bold fonts give a young feel accompanied by the young tone of language.

To develop the forms and conventions of media products I took into consideration the use of the three colour rule however to make headlines stand out more I used larger font with outlines. Using my experiences with photography I took a midshot of a male and female trying to show a bond between them, I did this by having their bodies close and in a comfortable position. By taking a high contrast photograph I think I have challenged conventions as it gives the photograph a different look. Giving the artists featured a feel different as the photograph has a shallower field of depth making the image stand out as it is sharper. With my double page spread I also challenged the conventions not only of magazines in general but of my own magazine. As I went outside of its music style to help introduce and inform people of a music ‘phenomenon’.

Over the course of this project I have furthered my knowledge into media institution such as IPC, Development Hell lmt and Bauer that publish the magazines. I feel my magazine would fit into and be distributed by would be Bauer as it has a large range of magazine and already publishes a handful of music magazines, making it easier to feature popular artists. By publishing with Bauer the magazine could also be published in other countries many magazine by Bauer.

The front cover of any magazine is a very important feature as this is what draws the readers attention in. I followed a similar concept to Smash Hits! Of bright clear and bold images and text on the front cover as not to complicate anything. I also followed this into my contents page trying to keep it sharp and easy on the eye so that the reader can easily find what they are looking for. I did this by using a white boarder and with different layers to create heading in which topics had been divided. As my target audience is young the photos on the cover are youthful and easily recognisable. To make the magazine interactive with the readers as well as more appealing I added teasers about prizes.

This project has brought awareness to me about the problems that the music magazine industry is facing and the strength put in to keep it afloat. By means of Photo Shop I had to edit my photographs and text. Helping me to understand the program better, how to us it effectively meaning I can now use it on future projects and my general IT skills.

If I were to redo this project I would spend more time on text and learning about how to uses them more efficiently however looking back at my preliminary task I feel I have progressed managing to keep a coherent theme, better editing on my photography and a solid concept for my magazine.

Photos

Photo for the front cover:

I took this photography in a photography studio. using a white background, however the background didn't come out white so i edited it on photo shop.

- I the final photograph i left in the chair as when i edited it out it made the male look as if he was floating, so i edited it back in by using a different layer.

-I enhanced the females check bones using a low opacity on the paint brush.

- I put more colour into her lips so that they would stand out more.

- By using a light green brush i made the diamonds on her face stand out more

- i increased the green in the males eyes as they were dull.

The name of my magazine is going to be FUSION i have chosen this name as the conitation of the word suggest a range of subjects 'fused' (mixed) together to make who. This illistrate my magazine as it included reviews, fashion and music.

the font of my magazine is going to be bold, clear and easy to read. This is so its catches the readers eye and is recogniasable which is an important factor for a front cover. For my font i shall generate one from a font website of design my own using photoshop. i would like my font to be behind the image. this is a typical magazine look used by well know magazines which is the effect i want to create with mine.

magazine plan

Name: Fusion or Star Map

Publishers: Development Hell Ltd

Price: £2.00- a cheap price that everyone can spare once o month
How often is published: Monthly

Glossy or Matt: Glossy- As it is more appealing.

Consumer profile: My music magazine is aimed at teenage girls aged 12-16. I have such a specific target audience because this is the age group most likely to spend their money on magazine with their favourite boy band in. The magazine I am going to create is focused mainly on Pop, R&B and Indie music because these are the types of music that are also popular for their looks aswell as music as apposed to dance music where the dj is often not recognised. As I have chosen such a specific target audience, I wanted to make the types of music broader therefore attracting more people within that age group. Although the magazine will be focused on chart music it will also help to introduce new and up coming artists this magazine will promote what artist like doing and there own views on other artist music its for teenage girls to feel like their getting to know their favourite bands.

Contents page (article ideas, regulars and features):
1. Reviews of albums and singles by a group of readers.
2. Reviews of artist concert and weather it is safe for my target audience to go with out and guardian (atrticle parent could read)
3. 12 questions answered by an artist in every issue
4. Photo album by an artist on tour, with funny stories and captions
5. Top 10 songs voted by the readers in every issue
6. The currant number 1’s 10 favourite songs and why.
7. Gossip from the stars i.e. who’s getting it on, who are friends, there favourite hang outs ect.
8. A day in a stars shoes (an artist is followed around and photographed for a day)
9. How to dress like your favourite artists (where to buy cheap alternatives to their designer items)
10. Interviews with new artists
11. 'Hotties in the Charts' free posters of the top 4 males in the charts.
12. review of a new up coming band

I have read articles from smash hits magazine. Which has a similar target audience, aswell as types of music. I have noted the way language is used and which words are used. However I shall also include words and phrases used by teenagers to keep the article causal and friendly

Ideas for double page spread:- ‘Concert Review’- These reviews are to guide buyer to which concert venues and artist would be safe and easily accusable to see without parental guidance. This is important as 12 year olds are coming into the age where they would be embarrassed to go with a parent. This article also reassures parent that concerts can be a safe and friendly environment. It will include reviews on such venues as, Wembley arena, 02 arena and Sheppard’s bush empire.- ‘A Star Photo Album’ – This article will be following a bands holiday away together to see what they are like when not working. The reader can observe what their favourite band gets up to on holiday and how they have fun. Photos, captions and funny stories will be taken will be presented. This article will give the reader a chance to feel similar and close to their favourite star.
- ‘ Review of a new band/ artist’- this give the magazine a opportunity to help new artists as well as maybe looking at different styles in music this could expand on the magazines target audience, which could be important as magazine sales are going down.

x4 original photo ideas:
1) An image of a male and female for a new duo on the cover. Looking smart and trendy, not pink and girl giving the cover a change from how it usually looks.
2) Photos of the two artists doing normal things- e.g. messing around making faces, playing game this is so the reader can relate to them therefore increasing a likeness of the artists
3) A photo of a girl band as it is a girly magazine.
4) a photo of fashionable people for the contents page, giving the reader an idea of what the articles about and what you can see on this page.
